The Way - Adult Faith Enrichment Program

Adult Faith Enrichment Program

In 2008, all parishes in the New York Archdiocese were instructed to provide an ongoing program directed toward “Intergenerational Family Catechesis.”

In response to this “mandate,” Mary Perillo, Director of Religious Education, asked Jerry and Mary Mandry, long time parishioners with extensive involvement in diverse parish programs, to join her in creating such a program. In consultation with other key parishioners, a format was created to include: scripture based teaching, group discussion, faith sharing, music and food.

The first “Family Time” was presented on Friday, November 7th and Sunday, November 9, 2008. The next session was offered in April 2009. These sessions were well attended and well received by parishioners of all ages, ranging from six months to 95 years. The written evaluations and comments submitted by the attendees made it clear that many Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Pompeii parishioners would welcome, in addition to “Family Time,” an expansion to include adult religious education and faith enrichment.

Reflecting on the insights and experience gained at that time, Mary Perillo and the Mandrys recognized the opportunity to offer THE WAY as a means to reach more people. In order to develop additional offerings, the core team invited Judy Schiavo, spiritual director, and Eileen McMahon, currently on staff at Mercy College and Director of our parish RCIA program, to join in the planning. This September Sidney Callahan, noted author and psychologist, will join the team. All these team members are former teachers and are presently serving in various parish ministries.

The team meets regularly to consider varied and pertinent topics for presentation by qualified speakers. The 2013-2014 schedule offered eight sessions for faith enrichment, spiritual growth and religious education. Plans for the 2014-2015 series are near completion and the schedule will be publicized in August, 2014.
